Made to match what's already there

Older buildings rarely follow standard measurements. Every piece is made to the exact dimensions of your property, so it fits properly and looks right.

Decades of experience on heritage buildings

Listed buildings and period properties need careful handling. The team has worked on older homes, traditional shopfronts and churches for more than 60 years.

The job isn't finished until it's right

That's not a slogan. It's how the team works - and it's what customers consistently say when they describe what makes the difference.

Timber Doors, Windows and Sash Windows

The most common work coming through the workshop involves timber doors, timber windows and sash windows.
A lot of these jobs involve properties where the existing joinery is worn, damaged or no longer doing its job properly. In some cases the original details need to be recreated so replacements match what was there before.

This kind of work includes:

If the profile or design isn't something that can be bought ready-made, it can be made in the workshop.

Heritage and Listed Building Joinery

A significant part of the work at Atkinsons Joiners involves older and listed buildings.

Working on these properties isn't the same as a standard installation job. Walls are rarely square. Openings are often irregular. And any replacement joinery needs to match what was originally there, not just fill the gap.

The team is experienced in:

  • Matching existing mouldings and historic profiles
  • Recreating original joinery details from what remains on site
  • Producing the drawings and cross-section details required for listed building consent
  • Working sensitively within conservation areas

Barnard Castle sits within a conservation area, and a large part of the workload reflects that. Most of the profile cutters in the workshop were made specifically to match original mouldings from local buildings.

Materials Used

The timber used on any job depends on what the project calls for.

Hardwood is commonly used for doors, windows and external frames. For external joinery where long-term stability matters, Accoya is a good option - it's a modified timber that holds its shape well through changes in weather and takes paint well.

The workshop also holds a wide range of profile cutters made specifically to match traditional moulding patterns found on local buildings, so unusual or historic profiles can be reproduced accurately.

What Customers Say

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you fit kitchens or fitted bedrooms?
No. The focus is on purpose-made timber joinery - doors, windows, frames and heritage restoration work. For fitted kitchens and bedrooms there are other companies better set up for that type of work.
What types of joinery does Atkinsons Joiners make?
The main work involves timber doors, timber windows and sash windows. The team also carries out heritage restoration, shopfront joinery, staircases and bespoke architectural joinery for older and period properties.
Do you work on listed buildings?
Yes. A lot of the work comes from listed buildings and properties within the conservation area. The team can provide the technical drawings and cross-section details that listed building consent applications often require.
How long is the waiting list?
Lead times are typically 2 to 3 months. This can vary depending on the size of the project and how busy the workshop is at the time. It's worth getting in touch early if you have a specific timeframe in mind.
Do you manufacture and install, or just manufacture?
Both. For homeowner projects, the team usually manufactures and fits the joinery. For builders and contractors, items can be made in the workshop for the builder to install on site.
Do you match existing joinery on older properties?
Yes. This is one of the most common types of work. Older buildings often have mouldings, profiles and dimensions that don't match anything available off the shelf. The workshop is equipped to reproduce these accurately, including unusual shapes and historic profiles.
What timber do you use for external joinery?
Most external doors and windows are made in Accoya, a modified timber that performs well outdoors and holds its shape through changes in temperature and humidity. Hardwood is also used where appropriate.
Do you cover areas outside Barnard Castle?
The work is mainly in Barnard Castle, Teesdale and the surrounding villages. If you're not sure whether your location is covered, it's worth getting in touch to ask.
Can I supply my own glass or ironmongery?
Yes. Some customers supply their own hardware, glass or glazing units and the team will work around what you provide. Others prefer the joinery team to manage the full supply - either approach works.
