No standard sizes — we work to your opening

If the opening isn't a standard size or shape, that's not a problem. We measure the actual opening and build to fit it. This is particularly common in older properties where windows have been altered or openings are no longer true.

Heritage glazing and period profiles available

We hold a large stock of profile cutters, many made specifically to match mouldings from older buildings in Teesdale. Where heritage double glazed units are required — for listed buildings or period properties — we source and fit these as standard.

If the shape, size or glazing requirement falls outside what a standard supplier can offer, it's the kind of work we're set up for.

Materials We Use

Timber choice depends on where the window is going and what it needs to do.

Accoya is our most commonly used timber for external windows. It's a modified wood that resists the kind of movement and swelling you'd expect from a window exposed to the weather year round. It holds paint well and has a long working life, which makes it well suited to windows that are difficult or disruptive to replace.

Hardwood is used where a more traditional appearance is preferred or where the project calls for it. It's regularly used on barn conversions and rural properties where a painted softwood wouldn't feel right.

Where a window is being matched to existing joinery in the property, we'll work in whichever timber makes sense to achieve that match.

We don't use uPVC. All windows are timber.

Windows for Period Properties and Listed Buildings

Much of our window work is on older properties — farmhouses, terraced stone cottages, period townhouses and listed buildings across Teesdale.

These jobs often present challenges that a standard window supplier can't easily handle. Openings may have moved over the years. Original profiles may not be available off the shelf. Listed buildings require glazing that meets heritage standards rather than standard double glazing.

We've built up a large stock of profile cutters over the decades — over 200 sets, many made to match original mouldings from buildings in this area. If the profile can be identified from the existing window, we can reproduce it.

For listed buildings, we can produce the technical drawings and cross-section details needed as part of a consent application. We're used to this process and handle it routinely.

Glazing Options

Most windows we make are double glazed. The type of unit depends on the property and any planning or heritage requirements.

For standard properties, toughened double glazed units are fitted as a matter of course. For listed buildings and period properties where planning conditions apply, we source heritage-style glazing units that satisfy the requirements while improving thermal performance.

Where customers have a preference for a particular type of glass — textured, patterned or specific to a room — we can work with glass supplied by the customer or sourced through our regular suppliers.

Making and Fitting

Once we have measurements and the brief confirmed, the windows are made in our workshop on Montalbo Road.

Fitting is carried out by our own team. On older properties this regularly involves openings that have moved or settled over time — we account for this during manufacture so the window fits correctly and operates as it should.

Painting is carried out by a local decorator once the windows are fitted. We work with several local decorators and can recommend someone if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you replace windows on a listed building?
Yes. Listed building work is a regular part of what we do. Replacement windows on a listed building typically need to match the original in terms of profile, style and glazing. We can produce the technical drawings required for a consent application and source heritage glazing units where needed.
How do timber windows compare to uPVC?
Timber windows tend to last significantly longer than uPVC when properly maintained, and they're the only option if your property is listed or in a conservation area. They can also be repaired more easily — a timber window with a rotten section can often be repaired rather than replaced entirely. uPVC windows, once deteriorated, generally need full replacement.
Can you match the style of my existing windows?
In most cases, yes. We hold over 200 sets of profile cutters, many made specifically to match mouldings and profiles from older buildings in Teesdale. If you can show us an existing window or provide dimensions and profile details, we can usually reproduce it accurately.
Can you make windows for unusual shapes or openings?
Yes. We make windows for all kinds of openings — including triangular, arched and other non-standard shapes. Older properties in particular often have openings that don't suit anything available off the shelf. Because we manufacture to order, the shape of the opening isn't a barrier.
What happens if my window frames are rotten but the opening is still sound?
In some cases it's possible to repair rather than replace. If the frame has localised rot, we can assess whether repair or replacement makes more sense. Where full replacement is needed, we manufacture a new frame and window to fit the existing opening.
Do you supply and fit the glazing or just the frame?
We supply and fit both. Double glazed units are sourced through our regular glazing suppliers and fitted as part of the job. If you have a preference for a particular glass type or have already sourced your own units, we can work with those instead.
Can you make windows to match others already in the house?
Yes. If you're replacing a single window or adding a window to a room and need it to match what's already there, we can work from the existing windows to reproduce the profile and style. This is something we do regularly on older properties where consistency matters.
