Types of Timber Windows We Make
We make a wide range of timber windows to order, including:
Casement windows in hardwood, Accoya or softwood
Bay windows, including double-storey bays
Dormer windows
Box windows
Triangular and other non-standard shaped windows
Windows for barn conversions and rural properties
Replacement windows for period homes and listed buildings
If the shape, size or glazing requirement falls outside what a standard supplier can offer, it's the kind of work we're set up for.
Materials We Use
Timber choice depends on where the window is going and what it needs to do.
Accoya is our most commonly used timber for external windows. It's a modified wood that resists the kind of movement and swelling you'd expect from a window exposed to the weather year round. It holds paint well and has a long working life, which makes it well suited to windows that are difficult or disruptive to replace.
Hardwood is used where a more traditional appearance is preferred or where the project calls for it. It's regularly used on barn conversions and rural properties where a painted softwood wouldn't feel right.
Where a window is being matched to existing joinery in the property, we'll work in whichever timber makes sense to achieve that match.
We don't use uPVC. All windows are timber.
Windows for Period Properties and Listed Buildings
Much of our window work is on older properties — farmhouses, terraced stone cottages, period townhouses and listed buildings across Teesdale.
These jobs often present challenges that a standard window supplier can't easily handle. Openings may have moved over the years. Original profiles may not be available off the shelf. Listed buildings require glazing that meets heritage standards rather than standard double glazing.
We've built up a large stock of profile cutters over the decades — over 200 sets, many made to match original mouldings from buildings in this area. If the profile can be identified from the existing window, we can reproduce it.
For listed buildings, we can produce the technical drawings and cross-section details needed as part of a consent application. We're used to this process and handle it routinely.
Glazing Options
Most windows we make are double glazed. The type of unit depends on the property and any planning or heritage requirements.
For standard properties, toughened double glazed units are fitted as a matter of course. For listed buildings and period properties where planning conditions apply, we source heritage-style glazing units that satisfy the requirements while improving thermal performance.
Where customers have a preference for a particular type of glass — textured, patterned or specific to a room — we can work with glass supplied by the customer or sourced through our regular suppliers.
Making and Fitting
Once we have measurements and the brief confirmed, the windows are made in our workshop on Montalbo Road.
Fitting is carried out by our own team. On older properties this regularly involves openings that have moved or settled over time — we account for this during manufacture so the window fits correctly and operates as it should.
Painting is carried out by a local decorator once the windows are fitted. We work with several local decorators and can recommend someone if needed.
